Marvin Zindler, 1921-2007

Although Zindler was for the most part unknown outside of Houston and Texas, his style of investigative journalism and sensationalism forged the path for the modern broadcast journalism we see nationally on such broadcasters as Fox News and locally in most markets on newscasts throughout the day and evening. His brief moment of national fame came with his crusade to destroy The Chicken Ranch, a brothel in South Texas and the subject of a widely viewed 1970s play and film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Zindler was a legend in Houston and one of its most popular and recognized personalities and made major contributions to help the disadvantaged and children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Tom Snyder, 1936-2007

Tom Snyder was a superb interviewer and an uncanny ability to talk to anyone about anything. He was thoughful, humorous, serious, stoic, insightful, and entertaining. His late night talk show on NBC in the 1980s and 1990s was highly informative. I very much enjoyed his program and often tried to make time to watch it on a regular basis for the reasons listed above and more.

Bill Walsh, 1931-2007

The legendary San Francisco FortyNiners Head Coach was truly a winner and touched many lives. He was a great coach, a teacher, offensive innovator, husband and father, and arguably one of the greatest ever in the NFL. I always enjoyed watching and following the 49ers under his leadership as they were a great team.

K. The List of the World's 15 Best Environmentally Oriented Cities

Portland, Oregon, is number two on the list and I am well aware of this progressive city's superb record. My younger brother lived there for several years about a decade ago and he was greatly influenced and impressed by the visionary citizenship and leadership in that community. Given his frustration with the widespread mentality of yesteryear and blase blind attitudes in the community he lives and serves in now, I would not be surprised to see him and his family return to the City of Roses in the coming years.

Portland is setting the benchmark for the way Americans will have to live out of necessity for many reasons in the not so near future. Disappointingly, only three other North American cities made the list -- Vancouver, San Francisco, and, very surprisingly, Austin. Seattle, Chicago, and Quebec City made honorable mention. Its amazing that places like Boulder, Denver, Minneapolis-St Paul, San Jose, and other communities with large numbers of well-educated and enlightened citizens have not done more to move in responsible directions. I wonder what the fifteen most un-green and worst environmental cities in North America ? I have to believe that most are in Mexico and the southern US.

Long July Heatwave Breaks

After over four consecutive weeks of at or above normal temperatures, a change in the local weather pattern has arrived with heavy powerfully cooling thunderstorms bring lots of rain.
Of course, it is still July so about five weeks of summer weather still awaits which is at times difficult to cope with as my residence lacks air conditioning and fans are only so effective in providing any comfort. For the month of July we are running nearly six degrees above normal and the climate here has been more like what I remember as a teen in NM in the 1970s. It is evident global warming is occurring. But complaining is a waste of time because before one knows it, the chilling winds of autumn and winter will be upon us.

Economic Change is Needed and Soon

Everywhere one turns, there are strongly worded articles about the decline of the middle class and the harsh consequences of Free Market Corporate Capitalism on American citizens and workers. Wages are stagnant, the cost of living keeps going up, and huge social costs are being incurred as individuals and families struggle and make sacrifices to keep up.

I am pleased the internet is getting this message out more and more. The mainstream corporate media is completely in the dark about it as they are completely fixated on corporations, the stock market, celebrities, and other meaningless babble that has no real economic interest to hard working individuals and families.

This is a pretty good idea for most if done right and if concentrating on driving remains number one. H. $100 a Barrel Oil is in Our Very Near Future


Prior projections were for this to happen not for another two years, but analysts now forecast this price level to be attained perhaps as soon as this autumn. This would result in a one-third increase in gasoline fuel prices, with the cost of a gallon of gasoline surpassing the $4.oo level and perhaps even nearing $4.50. This would indeed be a staggering and profound development on most people.

I. Could Gasoline Rationing Be an Answer for America's Problems ?


On the surface, one would say yes. Limiting households to 25-50 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel per week and setting up an exchange program where one could buy and sell "credits" for additional consumption is something that is very workable. But we have evolved into a society where commuters exist that drive 250 miles roundtrip daily for employment, education, and recreation. I know individuals personally who have an hours drive or more to meet those kind of obligations. Mass transit is not an option because of time, cost, or availability. Most vehicles in use get atrocious gas mileage, particularly those ever-present SUV's. Thus, one would have to conclude that any kind of fuel consumption controls will not occur anytime soon unless there is an unimaginable epic jolt across the globe.

K. Large Numbers of Fires Across the West as Drought Deepens Across Region

Frightening Appalling Development

Here is the legal text of the latest Bush Presidential Executive Order proclaimed on 17 July '07. Read it carefully and think about the very broad legal ramifications and implications this has. Another huge step towards greater tyranny, the formal formation and structure of a police state, and the end of constitutional and personal liberties has taken place.



"Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq,"

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.)(IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.)(NEA), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code,

I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that, due to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, it is in the interests of the United States to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 of May 22, 2003, and expanded in Executive Order 13315 of August 28, 2003, and relied upon for additional steps taken in Executive Order 13350 of July 29, 2004, and Executive Order 13364 of November 29, 2004. I hereby order:

Section 1.
(a) Except to the extent provided in section 203(b)(1), (3), and (4) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(1), (3), and (4)), or in regulations, orders, directives, or licenses that may be issued pursuant to this order, and notwithstanding any contract entered into or any license or permit granted prior to the date of this order, all property and interests in property of the following persons, that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense,
(i) to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of:
(A) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or
(B) undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people;
(ii) to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; or
(iii) to be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.
(b) The prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are not limited to,
(i) the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order, and
(ii) the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.

Sec. 2.
(a) Any transaction by a United States person or within the United States that evades or avoids, has the purpose of evading or avoiding, or attempts to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.
(b) Any conspiracy formed to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.

Sec. 3.
For purposes of this order:
(a) the term "person" means an individual or entity;
(b) the term "entity" means a partnership, association, trust, joint venture, corporation, group, subgroup, or other organization; and
(c) the term "United States person" means any United States citizen, permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign branches), or any person in the United States.

Sec. 4.
I hereby determine that the making of donations of the type specified in section 203(b)(2) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(2)) by, to, or for the benefit of, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order would seriously impair my ability to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, and I hereby prohibit such donations as provided by section 1 of this order.

Sec. 5.
For those persons whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States, I find that, because of the ability to transfer funds or other assets instantaneously, prior notice to such persons of measures to be taken pursuant to this order would render these measures ineffectual. I therefore determine that for these measures to be effective in addressing the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, there need be no prior notice of a listing or determination made pursuant to section 1(a) of this order.

Sec. 6.
The Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, is hereby authorized to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this order. The Secretary of the Treasury may redelegate any of these functions to other officers and agencies of the United States Government, consistent with applicable law. All agencies of the United States Government are hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order and, where appropriate, to advise the Secretary of the Treasury in a timely manner of the measures taken.

Sec. 7.
Nothing in this order is intended to affect the continued effectiveness of any rules, regulations, orders, licenses, or other forms of administrative action issued, taken, or continued in effect heretofore or hereafter under 31 C.F.R. chapter V, except as expressly terminated, modified, or suspended by or pursuant to this order.

Sec. 8.
This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right, benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers or employees, or any other person.

In these previous Executive Orders, I ord ered various measures to address the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by obstacles to the orderly reconstruction of Iraq, the restoration and maintenance of peace and security in that country, and the development of political, administrative, and economic institutions in Iraq.

My new order takes additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315 by blocking the property and interests in property of persons determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq or undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.

The order further authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, to designate for blocking those persons determined to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provi ded fi nancial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person designated pursuant to this order, or to be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.

I delegated to the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, the authority to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of my order.

Consequences from this executive order are made quite apparent in a conversation between New York US Senator and '08 Democratic Presidential Candidate and probable electee Hilary Clinton and under-secretary of defense Eric Edelman.

Clinton had asked Defense Secretary Gates for information on contingency plans for withdrawal from Iraq.

"Given the express will of the Congress to implement a phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq and the importance of proper contingency planning to achieve that goal, I write to request that you provide the appropriate oversight committees in Congress---including the Senate Armed Services Committee---with briefings on what current contingency plans exist for the future withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. Alternatively, if no such plans exist, please provide an explanation for the decision not to engage in such planning."

Edelman replied, to the Senate committee:

"Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia. [S]uch talk understandably unnerves the very same Iraqi allies we are asking to assume enormous personal risks."

Note the words "reinforces enemy propaganda" That could easily fall among the indictable conspiracies the Executive Order has in mind.

Leonard Joseph Lacey, My Father and Dad

Today, 20 July, marks the 76th anniversary of the birth of my father. He was born into a world of difficulty and hardship, and lived his life often in the shadow of tragedy and heartbreak. Yet he accomplished much and lived a full life with many adventures and opportunities. The challenges he faced and struggled to overcome often compelled him to make poor choices in lifestyle habits, many of which were socially acceptable with health consequences not well known a quarter and a half century ago and more. I would like to think that I learned at least a few lessons from him and took his example and became a better and more responsible healthy individual personally. I never smoked tobacco, used liquor in a substantially smaller quantity, particularly after age 30, stopped drinking coffee in 1996, have tried to eat more fruits and vegetables. and not let stress get to me and keep my circumstances in perspective ( but I am nowhere near perfect).

It would have a great help for me and my siblings and their families to have had him in their lives these last 26 years, but his spirit carries on in many ways that we are not even aware of on a regular basis. He did good in spite of all the obstacles and challenges in his way and his legacy is six offspring with nine grandchildren who are wonderful and beautiful people with years of continued success, achievement, contentment, and happiness ahead. I miss you, Dad, and I love you. I have never been or ever will be the man you were and are.

Law Enforcement Finally Waking Up to What We Knew Was Happening All Along

I, like many others, have had little doubt the US-Mexico border has been used freely for years by possible Middle Eastern terrorists to cross into the United States with orders to wait for a signal from superiors to then strike and launch an attack. The next attack will not be on the east coast or in LA. A heartland or southern city will be struck. With all the verbal warnings being expressed by administration officials lately about an impending attack, one would think that one of these cities or their suburbs will be attacked in the next 2-3 months. Who knows ? I am very suspicious of the inner circle of Bush officials, particularly Rove, becoming aware of an impending attack and preventing any action to deter it or allowing any information about it coming out, all in the name of political propaganda and future policy direction. I hope I am wrong.

I, too, hope Mark Cuban is unsuccessful in his attempt to purchase the Chicago Cubs later this year. Baseball at the Halfway Pole

The Mid-Summer Classic, the MLB All-Star Game, traditionally marks the halfway pole of the long season along with Independence Day. With the season now past the midway point, one can draw sure conclusions about which teams will continue to thrive and be playing for the championshhip in the postseason.

In the American League, it would appear the four postseason participants are already likely in place: Boston, Detroit, Anaheim, and Cleveland. But Minnesota, Seattle, Oakland, and maybe even New York will make a run to be able to participate but should come up short.

In the AL East, the Redsox have had a double digit lead for weeks now and a solid pitching staff anchored by Beckett, a bullpen led by Pappelbon, and a steady starting lineup including Ortiz, Youklis, Pedroia, Ramirez, Varitek, and Lowell have Boston poised to win their first division title in over 15 years. The disappointing Yankees have been beset by injuries and evident underachievement throughout their roster and have yet to show any real stretch of consistency thus far. It appears NY will miss the postseason for the first time since '93. Toronto has been wracked with injuries as Halladay and Ryan most notably have been injured. Baltimore is a big disappointment as the inept Angelos ownership continues to bungle and err with this club that had a lot of tradition before he took over. Things are so bad the manager has already been dumped and an interim field boss is still running the show weeks later. Brian Roberts is the only Oriole having a good year. Tampa Bay has a young and exciting everyday lineup, but their pitching is just plain horrendous as they are on pace to give up over 1000 runs and their defense is uncomparably woeful.

In the AL Central, Detroit and Cleveland have been staging a good pennant race between them so far as both teams sport solid offenses and pitching staffs. The Tigers with all their sparking young pitching and solid everyday players like Monroe, Granderson, Guillen, Ordonez, Sheffeild, and Polanco seem to have a slight edge over the Indians which will carry the Motor City Kitties to the division title, relegating the Tribe to the wild card slot. Minnesota is a good team but clearly is a step back with their pitching but their offense is potent enough to be able to carry the Twins to perhaps as many as 88 wins but no postseason bid this season. Chicago has all but collapsed in less than a year and a half after winning it all, and their pitching is near the bottom of the league with a sputtering offense. They will probably finish last in the division as they will be unable to hold off the steadily improving Kansas City Royals, whom have made strides this season and resemble the Brewers of two-three years ago. KC may be a Milwaukee or Detroit in the making and be a contender next year or '09.

Out in the AL West, the league's best club, Anaheim, are headed for a division title and a slot in the ALCS. The Angels are solid throughout their roster and have the look of a potential champion. Seattle may keep things interesting but they lack the depth, experience, and talent to win the division. The Mariners should win around 86 games. Oakland has been crippled by injuries and has struggled to stay above .500 but this club has a history of playing superbly in the second half so they cannot be written off. The A's may challenge the Angels yet. Texas, on the other hand, is DOA and is certain to finish last with probably the worst record in the league.

The National League picture is not as clear, but there are some favorites that have positioned themselves well so far and some contenders who may have enough to overcome them and be surprise participants in the postseason.

The NL East should be won by New York, but the Mets are inconsistent and their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. These shortcomings may be enough for young Atlanta and veteran Philadelphia to have a good chance to overcome the Mets, but the Braves and Phillies both have pitching woes and noticeable holes in their lineups that will be a challenge in of themselves to overcome. Florida is competitive but does not have enough to overcome all these other three teams. Washington has played better than expected but the Nationals are still going to lose over 90 games and finish last.

In the NL Central, Milwaukee has strived as I expected, but needs to demonstrate greater consistency particularly in road games. The Brewers should win the division and hold off the Cubs and Cardinals who both will make a run at Milwaukee but come up short. Chicago has noticeable holes in their offense and their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. St Louis has basically been a one man team as Pujols is the only Cardinal playing well and with any consistency. The Cardinals' pitching will inevitably be their undoing. Young Pittsburgh is improved and could finish .500 but a 15th straight losing season is more likely. Houston has a lot of holes and will have their worst season after a good run of competitiveness. Cincinnati is the worst team in the National League and will finish last with over 95 losses. There are some rumors that St Louis GM Walt Jocketty and Mgr Tony LaRussa and their staffs are going to be headed to head the Reds after this season which would be a tremendous development for the fans of this traditional organization who have seem many struggles in recent seasons.

The NL West promises to have a barnburner of a race down the stretch involving three, perhaps even four teams. San Diego has baseball's best pitching by far and that should be enough to carry the Padres to the division title in spite of their offensive shortcomings. The Dodgers have good solid pitching, but their offense is lacking and they have an atrocious defense but may yet take the wild card. Young Arizona has surprisingly stayed at or near the top of the division race all season and may have enough yet to win. Even younger Colorado got off to a poor start but has come back strongly to be on the edge of the race and continued solid performances by this team's players will have the Rockies in the race into September although their pitching is still a step back of SD and LA. San Francisco is hosting this week's All-Star Game and, with one other exception, will have little else to cheer for and get excited about for this season as the Giants are headed for a last place finish and around 90 losses. There is, however, that little record being pursued by Barry Bonds that will keep the crowds coming and the fans engaged in the Bay Area and elsewhere as he is but 5 home runs away from surpassing Aaron and his record of 755. Look for the record to fall in the last week or so of August as Bonds is showing his age (43) this season in spite of being in good health and 775 and probably 765 are out of the question for this aging controversial slugger.

We have already seen some tremendous milestone accomplishments achieved this season with Trevor Hoffman getting his 500th save; Roger Clemens getting his 350th win; Greg Maddox getting his 340th win; Craig Biggio collecting his 3000th hit on the way to a five-hit night; Ken Griffey Jr moving to 6th on the all time HR list behind Aaron, Bonds, Ruth, Mays, and Sammy Sosa, who hit his 600 career HR; and Frank Thomas hitting his 500th home run. Tom Glavine will win his 300th game in the coming weeks and if Randy Johnson gets healthy he will get his 290th win. Alex Rodriguez will hit his 500th HR before July ends.

I will go with NY, MLW, SD, & LA as the NL postseason participants, but cannot rule out PHIL, ATL, CHIC, STL, ARIZ, and COLO surprising and sneaking in.

As Usual, The Answer for the Future is Found in the Past

The United States and its citizens face tremendous challenges in the coming years, and I am talking about in the next 5-10 years. Whether or not we are up for these challenges remains to be seen, but a blueprint for possible success in circumstances that were considered to be as dire and threatening was successfully executed not too long, during World War II in the late 1930's and early to mid 1940's by people who were of the same age as our grandparents and parents in some cases. Following this course and plan in a similar way may be the only road to survival for us, and particularly for the children of today.

A Different Kind of a Routine Week

As this late evening wraps up the first full week of July, I have been engaged in getting moved into my new home and getting re-acquainted with personal property that I have not seen in many, many months. My strategy is to get the bedroom then the bathroom then the kitchen done largely with some overlap before starting on the office and the living room.

As I post tonight, strides have been made in the bedroom and bathroom and on Sunday my focus will extend to the kitchen with cookware, utensils, silver, dishes, and supplies to be located in the boxes or crates they are stored in, cleaned up, and appropriated storage identified. I will get the microwave and its cart brought up and cleaned. Cleaning supplies will be stored. And I will continue to work on the bedroom and bathroom as property is located that will be placed in those rooms. I project I can get most everything brought up and put into an appropriate place by July 15. I get Tuesday the 10th off this week so its another day early in the week to make progress although I need to locate a laundry so I can do the wash before the good socks inventory runs out.

I have come across clothing that I had forgotten about including shirts and pants. I still need to locate a box that has more of my shirts stored in it. After the 15th I can probably start to think about hanging pictures and decorating and getting my A-V center fully organized and arranged.
I have several pairs of jeans that I need to make a determination about as they are either way too big (some are sizes 44 and 46 waists and I am able to get into a 40 although its tight so a 42 is still best though they sag easily at the waist with any activity). I need to donate those unwanted pants along with socks and underwear to a charity in the coming months.

After I get settled in and as organized as possible, I will take some photos of the place and include them in this blog for my readers to be able to see. I will try to have enough so that one can get an idea about my new home and its size, layout, and colors (white walls, brown carpet, brown kitchen cabinets, and brownish yellow linoleum in the bathroom and kitchen. I would estimate the square footage at about 800 to 900 not including the garage below and the patio deck outside the front door. As expected, it is stuffy in the afternoons with the summer heat but open windows and deployment of fans provide relief and by sunset it is comfortable and then cool by morning. My front door faces south with windows in the bedroom and kitchen on the north and a window in the living room on the east. Thank goodness there are no west windows.

Work is busy as massive quantities of inventory of all kinds are arriving in preparation for Frontier Days which commences on 20 July and runs through 30 July. With the store's location right where many visitors will be, huge crowds and tremendous sales are certain. There will be some days where the store does over $75K in sales with total sales for the 10 days to be around $600-650K. I have never worked in a business where that much revenue was made in a month let alone in just a few days so this should be an interesting and exciting experience.

I look forward to meeting a lot more people from all over the planet as I already have. I have met people from every state except Delaware so far in the 100 days I have worked there and many nations in Europe such as Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Italy, Poland, Estonia, Spain, Luxembourg, Holland, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Switzerland, and Russia. Other nations include South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Its been very interesting to have been able to meet such a wide diversity of people from around the planet and have an ever so brief conversation with some of them.

I will probably get to work extra starting after the next ten days through the end of the month so some extra money can be made which will be welcome. But blogging may not occur as often as I will be busy and when not working greatly fatigued and nonfocused.
