Bob Howsam, 1918 - 2008

The Mountain Time Zone has lost a giant and a pioneer. Bob Howsam was the father of major league sports in Colorado and the region. After serving as a US Naval pilot in World War II, Howsam owned the minor league Denver Bears starting in 1947 and through the 1950s, building Bears Stadium west of downtown Denver which would grow and evolve into the heart and centerpiece of the time zone, Mile High Stadium. In 1959, he and seven others created the American Football League, thus making Howsam the founding father of the Denver Broncos. Howsam sold the Broncos to Gerald Phipps in 1964, having set the foundation for the most successful and popular sports organization in the Mountain Time Zone. Howsam also contributed to forcing Major League Baseball to expand in the early 1960s. He went on to be the general manager of the 1964 World Champion St Louis Cardinals and then on to an eleven year general managership of the Cincinnati Reds, designing a dynasty that won four pennants and two worlds championships during his tenure known as The Big Red Machine. He later served an instrumental role in getting Major League Baseball to create the Colorado Rockies. Howsam is in the Cincinnati and Colorado Halls of Fame and a nominee to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Rockies Radio Network Spring Training Broadcast Schedule Announced

Nothing beats listening to baseball on the radio, compelling one to be creative and visualize things without the aid of video. I have been listening to baseball on radio since 1969 so the '08 season will mark my fortieth year of having this fulfilling and enjoyable experience. All broadcast times are one-half hour before the first pitch; game times are MST through Saturday 8 March; and MDT from Sunday 9 March on. The Sunday 23 March game against the Los Angeles Dodgers will be the first ever Spring Training game ever between these longtime rivals, as the Dodgers will be in Arizona for a week of spring training after playing games in Peking, China, against the Padres; the Dodgers will play about six games in the Cactus League before heading to California for three games against the Redsox over the last weekend of the spring before the regular season gets going.
