Myron Cope, the longtime voice of Pittsburgh sports for over 35 years as the radio voice of the Steelers, passed after a long illness. Cope, a Pittsburgh native, started his journalism career in 1951, and later worked for a time at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He joined the Steelers broadcast team in 1970 as color commentator and was a memorable part of the Steelers four NFL championships in six years during the 1970s. He also wrote for Sports Illustrated and broadcast University of Pittsburgh Panthers football and Pittsburgh Maulers USFL football. Cope was actively involved throughout his adult life in philanthropic and charitable activities in the Greater Alleghany Valley, including for autism which afflicted his son Daniel. His cultural legacies include giving great nicknames for Steelers players, and an involvement in the creation of the Steelers fans' "Terrible Towel".
