The annual exhibition major league baseball game each summer in Cooperstown, New York, between two major league baseball clubs will end after 2008. This years game between the Cubs and Padres on 16 June will mark the finale of a decades long tradition dating back to 1939 that, until recently, always was played on induction day in late July or early August and featured one club from each league in an exhibition game that topped off the pageantry and festivities in this tiny upstate New York village each summer.This is extremely disappointing, but perhaps an All-Star game of retired players could be scheduled as an alternative. While it would be preferable to have the game on the same day as inductions, an option would be to schedule the game on the Wednesday after the MLB All-Star game on a day when no MLB games are scheduled. This would allow for greater participation from retired players who currently are employed as coaches, managers, and scouts for both MLB and minor league teams.
