A Near Miss

The planet Earth dodged a bullet literally on Monday 2 March as a fireball asteroid came very close to slamming into the planet or the moon. Had it hit, it would have caused an enormous explosion on a par with the famed 1908 Tunguska impact in Eastern Siberia. If the asteroid had come down in one of the oceans, a pretty good sized tsunami would have resulted. Sometime in the coming decades, a body from space of this size or larger will impact the planet with unbelievable detrimental and destructive consequences.
