We are now into the heart of February and it seems as if winter will never end. The days are cold, windy, and often gloomy. Even when the sun does appear, it does not seem like it is anywhere nearly enough. When winter gets to the point where it is closing in three consecutive months with little if any breaks, one's spirits and attitudes significantly flag. Everyday is a struggle not to let depression and gloom completely grab hold of oneself. One gets a better understanding of the mental illness known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. I probably have it good this winter, perhaps even more so than last winter, and definitely more than I ever did when I resided in CO or elsewhere. It probably helps to have somethings to look forward to, have a purpose, feel rewarded, or a number of other positive distractions to keep these down feelings at bay. For the most part, snow has been on the ground for 79 straight days, often in the streets and on the sidewalks (as I painfully discovered last month). And there is little to get enthused about in the coming weeks. One must really strive to focus on positive changes and things to rally around. One understands how the phenomena of "cabin fever" occurs. One just feels like they need to be transported to a whole other place where its warm and green and seemingly more friendly...There are a few things to look forward to but they have yet to full embrace the immediate environment. Hopefully some additional prospects will come to light in the coming days and weeks to help re-energize oneself and cause an awakening of positivity, optimism, and hope.
