Mountain West Conference Football Review After Week Three

What was forecast for the MWC before the season commenced has not come to fruition. The top three schools have had their struggles. Preseason favorite Texas Christian was clobbered at Texas and took it on the chin at Air Force, leaving the Horned Frogs with two losses early and in a competitive race for the conference title. BYU also has two early losses at UCLA and Tulsa. Utah lost their first two contests but bounced back strongly and surprisingly this weekend by blowing out UCLA in Salt Lake City.

The three schools expected to finish in the second tier look as if they may be closer to the top than originally anticipated. Surprising New Mexico shocked Arizona in Tucson this weekend and maybe the dark horse to take the conference. Wyoming did lose at Boise to the Broncos, but the Cowboys are clearly improved. Colorado State still is looking for their initial win after two very close losses to start the campaign, but the Rams appear to be competitive for the intra-conference slate of games.

Air Force also seems to be much improved, and a home conference win over TCU leads the Falcons and their fans to have greater optimism. Alas, the UNLV Runnin' Rebels and San Diego State Aztecs have yet to find their way this season, although UNLV did give a top 5 ranked Wisconsin squad a real good game last weekend in Las Vegas before losing in the final minutes.

With only one intraconference game played thus far in the season's first three weeks, much remains to be seen. Next weekend Air Force is at BYU and Utah at UNLV, games which will provide some greater insights on which teams really are contenders and pretenders for the 2007 Mountain West Conference Football Championship.
