L. Biggest Comeback Victory For Colorado Rockies

Colorado came back from being down 3-0 going into the 8th inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 10 inning 7-3 victory over the NL West Leaders. The Rockies left numerous runners on base the first seven innings but showed heart and resilience to pull out the win. It was just last Friday 24 August that they had another great comeback scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Washington Nationals, 6-5. The win tonight is more impressive as the Diamondbacks are a much better club than the Nationals and the comeback also occured on the road in Phoenix. As September dawns, Colorado is 69-65 and five games out of first place and also the wildcard race. As I surfed and blogged tonight, I went from frustration to elation and joy while watching the game simultaneously.

30 Days of 110 Degrees Heat...with More Still Yet to Come

As I mentioned earlier this week, the inevitable setting of a new record in Phoenix did come to pass on Wednesday 29 August. And on Thursday 30 August, the record was added on to as it hit 113 degrees in the Arizona capital making it the 30th day this year the temperature has met or exceeded 110 degrees. It is likely at least a few more days will cross this threshold before summers end in Central Arizona.

Death of a Newspaper Imminent

I always enjoyed and appreciated the Albuquerque Tribune over the 35 + years since I first was introduced to the publication (it actually had four pages of comics in the front section back then). I always considered the Tribune to be the much better of the two Albuquerque newspapers (it actually has a Pulitzer Prize Award) as the Journal is stodgy; it represents the old boy network and the local business establishment; is overall a sleepy and provincial paper with very poor coverage of national and local news and particularly sports outside of NM; and always seems not to be an advocate of progressive and aggressive public policy that would address the eternally ongoing social and cultural issues and problems that always have beset the community, region, and state.

I am sad to see the Tribune go but it was inevitable as the days of the afternoon and evening newspaper have gone the way of history and, since it was in a JOA with the Journal, becoming a morning paper was impossible. The afternoon El Paso Tribune and Phoenix Gazette died about a decade ago. I hope to see a few of the Tribune's editorial writers move on to better papers. Stevens is still doing sports commentary after all these years and VB Price is truly an intelligent insightful writer that is a must-read every Saturday. The citizens of Albuquerque and New Mexico are the real losers in this whole development. But print media is slowly dying everywhere and the Denver Post's days are numbered. Many other newspapers will die in the coming years as the internet has made them passe, people under 30 do not read, older loyal readers die off or move, and TV news holds the dominant position in most households for information.

This has been my favorite college sports conference for over 35 years in its present form and its earlier form as the WAC. '07 looks to be much as '06 with three schools fighting it out for the top: TCU, BYU, & Utah. Wyoming and New Mexico will finish also with winning records. CSU will be improved and Air Force is on the rebound. However, San Diego St and UNLV will be in for long seasons. Five bowl games will be played in by MWC teams.

Remembering the Passing of My Father 26 Years Later

Today, 28 August, marks 26 years since the death of my father, Leonard Joseph Lacey. He was born into a world of difficulty and hardship, and lived his life often in the shadow of tragedy and heartbreak. Yet he accomplished much and lived a full life with many adventures and opportunities. The challenges he faced and struggled to overcome often compelled him to make poor choices in lifestyle habits, many of which were socially acceptable but with health consequences not well known a quarter and a half century ago and more. I would like to think that I learned at least a few lessons from him and took his example and became a better and more responsible healthy individual personally. I never smoked tobacco, used liquor in a substantially smaller quantity, particularly after age 30, stopped drinking coffee in 1996, have tried to eat more fruits and vegetables. and not let stress get to me and keep my circumstances in perspective ( but I am nowhere near perfect).

It would have a great help for me and my siblings and their families to have had him in their lives these last 26 years, but his spirit carries on in many ways that we are not even aware of on a regular basis. He did good in spite of all the obstacles and challenges in his way and his legacy is six offspring with nine grandchildren who are wonderful and beautiful people with years of continued success, achievement, contentment, and happiness ahead. I miss you, Dad, and I love you. I have never been or ever will be the man you were and are.

Across the nation, but particularly in Sunbelt suburbs, housing has fallen into the abyss. Demand has all but disappeared, prices are sagging, and supply is at an unimaginable level. Most who try to become first time new owners will be unable to. Corporations like Countrywide seemed to exist for the sole purpose of completely stealing and defrauding everyone they encountered. The ripple effect and consequences are not able to be easily gauged, but a recession is already underway, state and local governments are seeing a decline in various tax revenues, retail will go deep into the tank, and unemployment will rise and those keeping their jobs will see less hours and no pay raises for the foreseeable future. It will be a cold winter in a lot of homes and places this year even as the actual outside temperatures are overall mild and above normal. Over a quarter-century of unmitigated arrogant greed continues to have ruthless cruel consequences.

Another Monday, Another Bush Junta Rat Jumps From the Sinking Ship

Last Monday it was the evil treacherous treasonous Rove. Today, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced he is bailing out and escaping. Gonzales did an extremely poor job as Attorney General and is undoubtedly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses and criminal acts. Hopefully at some point in the future justice will be served and he will be spending a good bit of time in a federal penitentary. It is very unfortunate that that this nation continually has to endure and tolerate Attorney General after Attorney General who are supposed to be the nation's top law enforcement officer but are indeed riddled with corruption, improprieties, scandals, and inappropriate acts and decisions that are often illegal and criminal. Look for another White House hack who is unethical and questionable to man the helm at Justice for the remaining 16+ months of this hapless administration. The potential replacement appointee may be so polarizing a choice ( read: Chertoff ) that current Solicitor General Paul Clement may end up serving as interim acting AG for the last 500+ days. The Justice Department has vacancies in its top three positions which is leaving the department adrift and disillusioned.

Gonzales' departure also means the last of the Texas Mafia that was in the Bush Junta has all left for greener pastures, leaving George largely alone and alienated as he meanders through the remaining 16 1/2 months in office. If he was not before, he truly is a lame duck now just marking time... and that may not be such a bad thing... he could after all still launch a war against Iran in the coming weeks and months.

William "Wild Bill" Hagy, 1939-2007

Wild Bill Hagy was one of the first ultimate superfans in sports. He was the greatest Baltimore Orioles fan and always participated in meaningful and intense ways while he was attending a ballgame, which was almost always for almost two decades in the 70's and 80's. Baseball, like its brethern basketball and football, now frowns on fan behavior like this in the taj mahal ballparks that have been built in the last 20 years and takes an active role in discouraging and eliminating such overt enthusiastic fan support. Too bad you have to go a college or high school game to be able to experience rabid fans like Bill Hagy. He really helped the Orioles have a greater home field advantage when he was at a game leading and encouraging active and fun fan support.

I just got to listen to the new Eagles' single How Long off their new upcoming album Long Road Out of Eden and watched the accompanying video for the first time and I was very impressed and enjoyed it immensely. It is quite excellent and will be greatly appreciated by fans of the band who particularly favor the early music of their career. A Re-Connection With A Friend From the Distant Past Begins

Earlier this year I received an email on my classmates.com personal site I set up. Mark G was an excellent and great friend that I had lost touch with over the last couple of decades. He came upon my information and contacted me. After a few months of not hearing back from him, he got back in contact with me and explained he had suffered the misfortune of the demise of his computer and the subsequent retrieval of lost emails and bookmarks is as always a tedious and time consuming process that results in some items not being addressed or paid attention to immediately. I have had this misfortune myself and have learned to take a few pre-emptive measures to make things slightly easier when a computer dies, but it is always a hassle and then some.

Mark and I worked together from 1979-1981 and shared a lot of fun experiences together; many were typical of young adults of that era and all were not exactly the most responsible and forward thinking actions one should aspire to. But we are all guilty of some youthful indescretions and immature foolishness and it is nothing to regret or look harshly upon in self-reflection. Our friendship and shared activities continued into the 1980s even as he went away to school out of state for a couple of years. However I left NM in 1987 and lost touch with him as I moved around to several places over the years.

One of the great things about the Worldwide Web and the Internet is that it facilitates being able to re-connect with people in ones past that one has lost contact with and fairly easily. It is certainly great to be able to have this wonderful experience of starting to touch base again with someone from ones past.

Warmest August Night Ever for Albuquerque

There have not been a lot of record temperatures set this summer across the Mountain Time Zone for the most part, but most months this year have had above normal temperatures. Summertime lows in Albuquerque now are starting to look like those in Phoenix and Tucson in the first half of the 20th Century, before the heat island effect became entrenched in the Arizona Sonora Desert because of urbanization. Might Albuquerque be getting their own noticeable heat island effect that can be documented ?

Mayberry Machiavellian Essence of Evil to Exit the White House

Before August ends, the man who is among the most responsible for the predicament our nation is in will be leaving his job as Chief White House Advisor. Karl Rove is the worst unelected official I have ever had to be aware of in my life. He is unethical, sleazy, smarmy, arrogant, immoral, two-faced, and the master of the untruth and spin. He is unquestionably guilty of numerous crimes and his unethical and illegal behaviors and acts have done great harm to many across the planet. George Bush is largely a front man and a brainless unimaginative marionette and Rove was one of the hands up the back of "W" along with Cheney, Rumsfeld, and others. His looming departure guarantees this administration will be even further adrift, mindless, foolish, and impotent during its remaining 500 plus days which will result in greater dangers for all American citizens everywhere and a greater certainty that war will commence with Iran soon. It also means that Cheney will be the power center and making most of the important decisions even more so than he has up to now. Hopefully the next we hear of the eternally deceitful Rove is when he is indicted and convicted of many of the crimes he committed and when he goes to spend many years in a federal penitentary. The news of his looming departure is excellent news for American citizens and others around the planet.

Phil Rizzuto, 1917-2007

Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto was the quintessential New York Yankees shortstop and the heart of a team that was incomparably dominant for over a decade. The 1950 AL MVP, "The Scooter" was part of seven world championships and did all the little things that need to get done for teams to be successful. He served in the US Navy for three years (1943-45) during World War II (one of countless many professional athletes to do so--where are these athletes during our current wars ?). After his successful 13 season baseball career ended in 1956, he then went on to be a broadcaster for 40 years with the Yankees on WPIX. This is where I had the fortune to hear him with his distinctive style beginning when I was a boy in 1969 and on occasion through the years until he retired in 1996. His broadcast style was warm and relaxed, he had an unassuming sense of humor, and his use of his classic trademark " Holy Cow ! " made listening to ballgames pleasant and fun.

Concern Grows -- and Optimism Grows

As Monday morning 13 August dawns, it is extremely alarming to see the Boston Redsox with only a lead of 4 games over the surging epitome of all evil, the New York Yankees. A double digit lead at one time has diminished by 70 %. The two clubs meet head to head six more times this season, with three games in Yankee Stadium Tuesday 28 August to Thursday 30 August and the final three regular season meetings at Fenway Park Friday 14 September to Sunday 16 September. Both teams play the majority of their remaining schedule against intradivisonal opponents Baltimore, Toronto, and Tampa Bay. The Redsox also have four home games against Anaheim; two home games against Oakland; four home games against Minnesota; and four road games in Chicago. New York also has three home and four road games versus Detroit; three road games in Anaheim; three home games against Seattle; and three road games in Kansas City. Thus, the schedule is a tossup to consider at this point for the most part, so how the six head to head games may be the determining factor.

On the other side of the spectrum, it is truly exciting to be following a young and exciting Colorado Rockies club in a pennant race. The Rockies went 5-2 on this last homestand against the two best clubs from the NL Central, Milwaukee and Chicago. This week could be the toughest test yet as the team travels to Southern California for three night games against San Diego followed by three games in Los Angeles over the coming weekend with two night games and a Sunday afternoon tilt. The only other of the remaining seven weeks left season that may be a greater challenge will be the finale the last week of September with three games in LA again and the season series finale at home with three against the Arizona Diamondbacks, another young and exciting overachieving team and the current division leader and odds on favorite to take the NL West pennant. If the Rockies continute to play well and stay in the race until the last week of September, this will be a season to remember for sure and among the best in the 15 year history of the club. At 61-56, the remaining 45 games break down to 23 at home and 22 on the road. Realistically, Colorado needs to at least go 16-7 at home over the last 23 at Coors Field and split the remaining road games with 11 wins. 27 more wins will give them 88 for the season and that is a total win number I would gladly take my chances on for winning the divison or at least being the wild card. The Rockies 23 home games are as follows: four with Pittsburgh; three with Washington; three with San Francisco; three with San Diego; three with Florida; four with Los Angeles; and three with Arizona. The remaining 22 road games consist of six with San Diego; six with Los Angeles; three with San Francisco; three with Arizona; and four with Philadelphia. The 14 remaining non-divisional games are critical and I can envision nine or ten wins there. Split the 18 on the road with the four divisional rivals and win 8, 9, or 10 of the remaining 13 home games within the division and things could be very good indeed... Lets hope the pitching staff doe not suffer any further injuries, the bullpen keeps looking great, the defense continues to sparkle for the most part, and the hot hitting the last several weeks continues, and Clint Hurdle continues to push the right buttons and make great decisions.

Ah, the joy of pennant races !... and I did not even touch on the ones going on in the other four divisions ! It keeps me excited and engaged deeply in this 39 year old hobby and pastime of mine.

This is a development that will be essential to follow in the coming years. One would have to guess the melt projections will continue to be underestimated and an exponential increase in open sea with a smaller permanent pack will be in the future, the near future. The full consequences of this dynamic change are difficult to quantify but at a minimum we are looking at increased sea levels, a decrease in winter temperature severity across the Northern Hemisphere, and changes in precipation types, patterns, and amounts. D. Minimum Wage Needs to Include Everybody

New Album by The Eagles Nears Release

Its hard to fathom twenty-eight years have gone by since The Eagles released the album, The Long Run, the last one they released. It will be very interesting to hear the music and see how they have changed and evolved over that time. The group and its music evolved tremendously from their first album around 1970 to the finale so it is highly probable they will are making a new album that will be different in some ways from what we are familiar with.

Collapsed Bridge Tragedy in Minnesota Could Easily Occur Elsewhere

There has been an overall lack of focus on deteriorating, aging, and inadequate infrastructure in our nation on both the federal and state level since the Reagan years. The American Society of Civil Engineers estimate a backlog of maintenance and repairs that exceeds $1.5 trillion.

Here in Colorado, there are over 100 bridges and spans in need of attention, and in the Denver area, there are ten critical areas. Some of those have not been funded for repair or replacement which is highly alarming. Governor Ritter and the CO state legislature should make procuring funding for these essential safety projects a priority of the highest order for the '08 legislative session. Things are also in bad shape here in Wyoming, as WYDOT has determined it needs over $500 million just to maintain and get roads, highways, and bridges up to an acceptable level of safety statewide in the next two years.

The stretch of I-25 that runs over the South Platte River just west of downtown near Mile High Stadium is among the worst bridges in the US, ranking ninth according to the Federal Highway Administration. Yet there is no plan or funding in place for this dangerous stretch which almost does not exist in the minds of travelers and commuters using this area as the bridge is really not discernable to drivers while on it as it has been concealed for the most part.

I am also well aware of the sorry condition of the elevated portion of I-70 north of downtown and east of the Mousetrap between Washington St and Colorado Blvd, a stretch of almost two miles. This stretch of highway is been there for about 50 years and almost continually is overloaded and full of traffic. It is highly inadequate for the amount of use that occurs on it. The project to replace and expand this bridge and elevated highway corridor, along with the others listed in the link below from the Rocky, should be approved and funded so the project that need to be done so urgently can commence next summer and be completed by summers end 2010.

The shocking tragedy that occurred in Minnesota on I-35W over the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St Paul resulting in many deaths and injuries must not be allowed to happen elsewhere just because politicians do not want to raise taxes on corporations, businesses, the wealthy, and on diesel and gasoline fuel consumption.

B. Democrats Begin to Fight Free Trade


This is an important issue where the Democrats can score big on. Free trade has had dire repurcussions on the American worker, eliminating millions of manufacturing jobs nationwide in the last 15-20 years and resulting in lower wages with virtual stagnation in pay increases. Big changes are needed to bring trade and the disparity of imports to exports so the American citizenry and working class can be empowered economically and socially again. Ultimately, that means tariffs and levies on imported goods, primarily from China and an assessment of 10 to 20 % is in order.

C. Grim News with Murdoch Takeover of Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal


The continued compaction of news media into a small oligopoly continues with severe consequences on both readers and professionals working in the industry. We need a broad anti-trust action against this growing threat to democracy, free speech, and competitive capitalism. A return to media ownership rules and laws that existed in the 1980s and before is essentially necessary with strict limitations and limited cross media ownerships and interests.

D. Balance of Power Lost Over War Powers Authority


Constitutionally, Congress was supposed to be the authority for authorization of war actions. That has been totally lost to the Executive Branch which has shifted power and resulted in a loss of any accountability and assessment by the Legislative Branch. This is not what the Framers put in the Constitution, but it is difficult to imagine any possibility of a return to the original framework and authority originally written into the Constitution with the kind of people in Washington today and in the near future. Too bad for all of us.
