And the Yankees Go Down -- And They Go Down Hard !

It is always great to see the mighty fall and the reign of the king to end. The Cleveland Indians caused just that tonight as they beat the New York Yankees, 6-4, in Game Four of an ALDS to win that series three games to one. Cleveland goes on to play the Boston Redsox in the ALDS. For the Yankees, it is the end of an era. Steinbrenner has already promised that longtime manager Joe Torre is out with this loss. Alex Rodriguez will be moving on to $greener$ pastures, Posada and Rivera are out of New York, and a number of other changes to the roster are expected. 2008 very well may be the year the Yankees finally have a down year as they are in, for them, as close to a rebuilding process as it would get in New York.

For us fans of the game tormented by the Yankees this past 13 years, these changes are greatly welcome and refreshing. Hallelulah !

A Lost Story in History

All baseball fans know about Don Larson's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. But here is a story about a near no-hitter nine years earlier on baseball's biggest stage.

I Made Myself a Casserole & It Turned Out Tasty

I clipped a coupon from the newspaper a couple of weeks back that had a recipe for a casserole. Since it is cooler now, I can now use the oven to cook and bake some foods that I have not been able to as of yet and for the first time in a long time. The effort (if you can call it that) was well worth it. The casserole turned out very good and tasty and it is enough to give me a nutritious and healthy meal for three dinners.

The Dream Lives On !!! Onward to the LCS !!!

HOW SWEET IT IS !!!
A WONDERFUL SEASON CONTINUES !!!

A SWEEP OF THE LEAGUE DIVISIONAL SERIES !!!

This amazing run for the Colorado Rockies and their fans like me continues as they won their 17th game in their last 18 as they completed a three game sweep of Philadelphia tonight at Coors Field with a nice 2-1 win. Unlike the first two at Philadelphia this game was tightly played with not much offense and a lot of very good pitching by both teams. But Colorado went ahead for good in the bottom of the eighth and closed it out decisively in the ninth to finish off the sweep

Onward to the National League Championship Series starting Thursday night with game one in Phoenix against their rival and this season's NL West winners, the Arizona Diamondbacks ! Game two will be Friday 12 October and games 3-5 back in Denver Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday 14-15-17 October with games 6 and 7 if necessary back in Phoenix on Friday and Saturday 19-20 October. All games on TBS and on ESPN radio with 850 KOA-AM continuing their local coverage. Lets hope weather does not interfere with the games as anything is possible in October.

WAY TO GO ROCKIES !!!!!!

INCREDIBLY WONDERFULLY AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!

DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' ! HOLD ON TO THIS FEELING !!!

WE ARE PLAYING FOR THE PENNANT !!!!!!!!

YEEHAW !!!! YEAH !!!!

And if there was ever any doubt about the class and professionalism of these players, this generous and selfless act says it all about these guys. And the organization followed up with another great move.

My Week in Review

I will try to do a post like this once a week to list some of the things I did to fill my time over the last week.

Sunday 30 September: It was a cooler day, with rain off and on into the afternoon. I went to King Soopers for the weekly grocery run, before coming home to watch the Rockies game. After the win that got Colorado into the play-in game with San Diego, I watched the end of the Broncos game. I read both Sunday papers and enjoyed some frozen french toasts strips that I microwaved. I then had to go to a meeting at work for about 2 1/4 hours to get briefed on the upcoming bi-annual complete store inventory which has to be done before we go home on Saturday. The manager gave us burgers and salad to eat while at the meeting. When I got home around 8pm, Hank had called and wanted me to accompany him to the Monday Rockies game. We unsuccessfully tried to get tickets online while conversing on a number of subjects.I then watched the fifth installment of "The War" on PBS until midnight and then hit the hay.

Monday 1 October: Another day off. I ran a couple of errands after breakfast and then headed to Denver around 2:30 after filling with gasoline at the truck stop. $2.63 per gallon. A warm day with sunshine until I drove into the Denver metro area and then mostly cloudy there. I arrived at the University Park and Ride and rendezvoused with Hank around 4:10 and then we caught the train to downtown. We got some cash from the ATM and then tried to find tickets but were initially unsuccessfull. Downtown is full of people and very much alive with excitement ! After a beer at the Sports Column, we walked around Lodo again for about 10-15 minutes as the game was underway. Finally I encountered a man with two tickets at a good price and we were able to sit in the third deck just past the first base infield about five rows from the front. We had a real good view of all the action and the place was packed as everyone was excited and loud. It was a long game going about 4:45 before the great wonderful ending occurred. We celebrated loudly and excitedly like everyone else. We made our way out of the ballpark and caught the train back to the park and ride. We then had a late dinner at Village Inn on S. Colo. Blvd and talked some more before parting ways around 1am. I got back to Cheyenne around 2:20 am and crashed into bed, very happy and tired.

Tuesday 2 October: Back to work with the 8+ hour day after a short night with less than normal sleep. Nothing memorable occured while at work on this day. Then back home by 5:45pm after putting power steering fluid in the Ford. Surfed and watched a little TV before drifting off for awhile. Awoke to watch Boston Legal and then caught the final installment of "The War" before going to bed around midnight.

Wednesday 3 October: Again at work with an 8+ hour day. Listened to the Rockies game while beginning the inventory process counting product in backstock. Went to buy some oil to put into the Ford. Got home to watch the Redsox finish off the Angels and then watched Arizona beat Chicago. Caught a little of the Avalanche season opener. Ate broccoli cheese chicken soup and sandwiches. Went to bed around midnight.

Thursday 4 October: A virtual carbon copy of Wednesday. After I got off work, filled the Ford up. Ate canned lasagne for dinner. Watched Earl, 30 Rock, Office as Yankees were getting clobbered by Cleveland. Drifted off watching Arizona and Chicago as that game lasted until near midnight.

Friday 5 October: After the end of the eight hour work day, I came directly home to watch the tight NY-Cle game and enjoyed the insects swarming over NY helping the Yankees to lose another. Watched the Redsox-Angels game and zapped over to the Utah game as they rolled Louisville. Enjoyed Lloyd BBQ Chicken Sandwiches for dinner.

Saturday 6 October: A very long day at work getting the inventory count done. Worked almost a twelve hour day. I was able to listen in on my headphones radio to the Wyoming game and stay minimally caught up on some of the other college football. I got home before 8pm to catch the Rockies game underway. Zapped to jump over to some of the college football and saw the end of the USC-Stanford upset. I will probably have a sandwich after I finish this post before I fade and hit the hay in about an hour or so. The weather changed tremendously today as a storm has arrived cooling us down from the mid to upper 70s we have had for most of the week into the 40s with rain imminent and continuing through Sunday again like last weekend.
And the Rockies win ! The dream and elation continues ! More on this in the next post.

MLB Playoffs Outlook, LDS

[Its a little late, I know (its been a long tiring week and it still is not over yet).]

Here are my predictions for the LDS for MLB this October. Seven of the eight teams are different in the postseason compared to last year.

National League

Colorado over Philadelphia, 3 games to one game

Arizona over Chicago, 3 games to one game

The two winning clubs have an edge over their losing opponents in the pitching and defense areas, and Chicago's edge offensively over Arizona will not be enough.

American League

Boston over Anaheim, 3 games to 2 games

Cleveland over New York, 3 games to one game

The homefield advantage significantly helps both Boston and Cleveland, as all four teams are largely even across the board. Cleveland is underrated in both offense and pitching, and Boston is much better than their regular season record showed. Anaheim will give it a good fight, but will come up just a little short.

Colorado Rockies Take 2-0 NLDS Lead

The Colorado Rockies continue to accomplish the improbable as they took the first two games in one of the NLDS with solid victories over the hometeam Phillies. The best of five series resumes Saturday night at Coors Field at 7:30pm with the threat of inclement weather looming and forecasts for even worse weather should a game four be necessary Sunday night at 8pm. I, however, have confidence the Rockies will end it Saturday making it a sweep. Arizona is winning game two of the other NLDS as this post went to press which could make it 2-0 for the Diamondbacks. We may get an NLCS with two teams not even picked to be the two best in their own division. And it would be the first professional sports championship involving both teams from the Mountain Time Zone.

I did get to attend the NL wildcard tiebreaker at Coors Field on Monday 1 October and I must say it was probably the best game I have ever seen in person. Thats a pretty tall statement considering I have attended over 200 games in person, be it regular season or spring training games. It was a once in a lifetime trainload of thrills and I was fortunate to be accompanied by my brother and share in this unbelievable event with all the excitement that ensued. Getting tickets to the NLCS would seem to be impossible or too costly which is disappointing. I could have gone to the NLDS game on Saturday with my friend Matt in Denver, but my work is holding its bi-annual inventory which will prevent my being able to even watch the game let alone attend it. Alas, sometimes life is unfair, but at least I was able to attend one game in this postseason.

Lets go Rockies...keep it going...two down, one to go...then on to the NLCS !

Sunday 30 September News Articles and Observations

Here are some of the Sunday 30 September news articles and my observations concerning them.

A. McCain on the Rebound ?

The Arizona Senator may yet make a comeback and contend more seriously for the GOP Presidential nomination.

B. Significant Split Occuring in Republican Party

The Guilliani candidacy is completely unacceptable to many that make up the core of the Republican Party, and that could mean yet another third party candidate in the mix in '08.
I would assume it would be a low level GOP politician or perhaps former Judge Roy Moore of Alabama.

D. New Supreme Court Session Faces Controversial Legal Questions

It is probably easy to project what the rulings will be on all these cases, as the sitting judges on the Court seemed to be ideologically entrenched with little room for open-mindedness as often what is needed when dealing with cases of magnitude and significance like these.

E. Unrest, Violence in Burma Only to Increase

This SE Asian nation, self-named Myanmar by the military dictatorship, appears to be at a point where change could occur, or a repeat of Budapest in 1956 and Prague in 1968 will happen. I am not optimistic as the Bush Junta is all smoke no fire on this issue.

G. Chemicals Equal Cancer

There are so many destructive and harmful synthesized and man-made chemicals in our environment nowadays. They are everywhere from what we eat and drink to what we wear to where we live and work. The longterm consequences of this chemical interaction with living beings, be it animals or humans, is still poorly understood in many cases and ways. Looking back in history, there was nothing anything like the cancer rate we have had in the last 50 years when you look at society back a century ago or more. ALDS Schedule Set

With Cleveland losing Saturday evening at Kansas City, the Boston Redsox clinched the best record in the American League for the regular season. The Redsox chose to take the "B" schedule for playoff games against Anaheim.

Here is the schedule of games on a daily basis with gametimes yet to be determined.

WED 3 Oct Anah @ Bsn GAME 1 Lackey v Beckett 4:30pm MDT

FRI 5 Oct Anah @ Bsn GAME 2 Escobar v Schilling 6:30pm MDT

SUN 7 Oct Bsn @ Anah GAME 3 Weaver v Matsuzaka 1pm MDT

MON 8 Oct Bsn @ Anah GAME 4 Lackey v Beckett 7:30pm MDT

WED 10 Oct Anah @ Bsn GAME 5 Escobar v Schilling 6:30pm MDT

In the other ALDS, Cleveland and New York will play their best of five series over a seven day period rather than the eight days Boston and Anaheim could take. This could be advantageous from a pitching standpoint.

THR 4 Oct NYY @ Cle GAME 1 Wang v Sabathia 4:30pm MDT

FRI 5 Oct NYY @ Cle GAME 2 Pettitte v Carmona 3pm MDT

SUN 7 Oct Cle @ NYY GAME 3 Clemens v Westbrook 4:30pm MDT

MON 8 Oct Cle @ NYY GAME 4 Mussina v Byrd 4pm MDT {changed to 5:30pm MDT}

WED 10 Oct NYY @ Cle GAME 5 Wang v Sabathia 3pm MDT

This year marks the start of a change in the scheduling length for both the LDS and LCS. Previously the LDS was conducted over a six day period and LCS an eight day period. The LCS starting this season will take place over ten days.

The National League schedule will be known in about eighteen hours and we should be made aware of the gametimes sometime later on Sunday for the TBS exclusive broadcasts. FOX does not broadcast the LDS any longer and only the ALCS. TBS has the NLCS, which starts on Thursday 11 October, one day before the ALCS commences. The 103rd World Series broadcast by FOX starts on Wednesday 24 October in the city of the AL Pennant winner with a Game Seven if necessary scheduled for Thursday 1 November. It could be really cold in Boston or Cleveland if that eventuates.

**UPDATE** HERE IS THE NLCS SCHEDULE:

WED 3 OCT COLO @ PHIL Game 1 Francis v Hamels 1pm MDT

THR 4 OCT COLO @ PHIL Game 2 Morales v Kendrick 1pm MDT

SAT 6 OCT PHIL @ COLO Game 3 Moyer v Jimenez 7:30pm MDT

SUN 7 OCT PHIL @ COLO Game 4 Lohse v Redman 8pm MDT

TUE 9 OCT COLO @ PHIL Game 5 Francis v Hamels 4:30pm MDT

--------

WED 3 OCT CHI @ ARIZ Game 1 Zambrano v Webb 8pm MDT

THR 4 OCT CHI @ ARIZ Game 2 Lilly v Davis 8pm MDT

SAT 6 OCT ARIZ @ CHI Game 3 Hernandez v Hill 4pm MDT

SUN 7 OCT ARIZ @ CHI Game 4 Zambrano v Owings 11am MDT

TUE 9 OCT CHI @ ARIZ Game 5 Lilly v Webb 8pm MDT

Unlikely Results Give the Rockies a Chance Still on the Season's Last Day

Going into Saturday 29 September it seemed unlikely the Colorado Rockies would live to see another day. But they got a lot of help and then took care of their own business decisively. Milwaukee knocked off San Diego in extra innings and Washington surprised Philadelphia, setting up the possibility still of the Rockies making the postseason yet.

THE DREAM LIVES !!!!!!!!!

Here are the pertinent standings at the close of the day Saturday 29 September MDT:

Wild Card

San Diego................89.....72......553.....-
Colorado..................88.....73......547.....1
Philadelphia............88.....73......547.....1
New York................88.....73......547.....1

Arizona has clinched the NL West and Chicago captured the Central A number of playoff and tie scenarios exist going into the last day. It is safe to say if San Diego loses and any of the other three win, things will need to be seriously sorted out. An up to four team playoff for the wildcard could be necessary. This link gives some idea of how complicated the scenarios are.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3038686

Sunday's gametime starts are pretty staggered. New York starts at 11am, Philadelphia at 11:30, San Diego at Noon, and Colorado at 1pm. I believe TBS may provide cut-in action on the three early games with FSN-RM covering the Rockies game. For radio listeners, ESPN radio (1600 AM in Denver) will be on top of all the games; and the Rockies game, normally on 850 KOA, will be on 630 KHOW due to the Denver Broncos game having higher broadcast priority.

We really need a miracle. Its Glavine v Willis at Shea, a real good pitching matchup. At Citizens, its the ageless Jamie Moyer for the Phils against respectable Jason Bergmann for the Nats. Up at Miller, Tomko is slated for the Padres against Suppan for the Brewers. You cannot rule out Peavy pitching though, either as the starter or in relief. And at Coors, Uvaldo Jiminez goes for the Rockies against the tough Doug Davis for the Diamondbacks, another good looking pitching matchup. I would have to say the three other contenders have an edge in all three games, and if the Padres win, its all over for Colorado, so we really need a super effort from Milwaukee to keep us alive to at least have a chance to get in.

So after Friday night's disappointments, its time to crank it up one more time:

GO ROCKIES !!!!!!!!!!! BEAT THE DIAMONDBACKS !!!!!!!!!!!

GO BREWERS !!!!!!!!!! BEAT THE PADRES !!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO MARLINS !!!!!!!!!! BEAT THE METS !!!!!!!!!

GO NATIONALS !!!!!!!! BEAT THE PHILLIES !!!!!!!!!!

HOLD ON TIGHT, TO YOUR DREAMS (ELO)

DON'T STOP BELIEVIN" (JOURNEY)

GONNA FLY NOW (BILL CONTI, from ROCKY)

Saturday 29 September News Articles and Observations

Here are some recent news articles for Saturday 29 September and some brief observations on them.

A. The Collapse of the American Middle Class Economy

Over a quarter century of overall Republican leadership and the utter failure of Democrats to maintain focus on economic issues rather than special interests combined with a complete dedication to greed and immorality by corporate executives and management have put most Americans into a no-win situation and a declining quality of life.

D. We are not the America We Were

America was not without grave injustices and flaws in the past, but watching the miniseries on PBS about World War II by Ken Burns plainly shows that we have lost much more as nation and a people in the over sixty years since then. 90th National Hockey League Season Starts Saturday 29 September in London

Hockey season is here with the opening weekend of special games being played across the pond in London, England between the defending Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks and their cross Southland rival Los Angeles Kings. The two games are the first regular season NHL games ever played outside of North America. The second of the two games will be at 10am MDT Sunday 30 September and be televised by Versus, the regular national broadcaster of NHL games. Regular nationally televised games by Versus will be on Mondays and Tuesdays. NBC broadcasts Sunday afternoon games starting in January, and they will have a special broadcast on Tuesday 1 January, New Years Day, when Buffalo hosts Pittsburgh in a game being played outside at Ralph Wilson Stadium where a sellout crowd of around 80,000 or more will be in attendance. The NHL previously successfully staged an outside game in Edmonton a few years back. Lets hope it is good weather for outdoors hockey that day. In recent years Buffalo has had some days in the 60s and low 70s deep into December.

I will post my NHL forecast in the next few days before the rest of the league starts their seasons this coming Wednesday 3 October. The Colorado Avalanche open up that evening with an 8pm tilt against the Dallas Stars that will be nationally televised. With the regular season going for over six months to the first Sunday in April, most weeks teams will have 2-4 games per week. I hope to catch many if not most of the Avalanche games this upcoming season as the team will be very good this year and should win their division. Every Avalanche game is scheduled to be broadcast this season with 74 of the 82 games on Altitude with the other 8 games either on Versus or NBC. If things work out, I might even attend a game or two at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver perhaps against Detroit and the New York Rangers. The Rangers were my favorite team when I was young and first started following hockey 38 years ago. When I was in my early adult years, my favorite teams were the Los Angeles Kings, the Edmonton Oilers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Later I was a fan of the San Jose Sharks, but since the creation of the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, they have been clearly my favorite team.

GO AVALANCHE ! WIN A THIRD STANLEY CUP !

East Pacific La Nina Means Warmer Drier Winter for Southwest, Central Rockies

Analysis by climatologists and meteorologists strongly indicate a La Nina is forming and gaining strength in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. If this phenomena reaches its anticipated peak, the climate and weather from California eastward and across the Central Rockies and High Plains will be much nicer than normal with above normal temps and below normal precipitation, including snow. After last winter, a radical swing to weather that would be the opposite of what we endured would be greatly welcome by us flatlanders. I know the livestock, agriculture, and water resources managing folks will think otherwise.

It All But Comes To An End

Close but no cigar. Thats about all that can be said now after the Rockies dropped a 4-2 decision to Arizona Friday night. Colorado drops to 87-73 and has their eleven game winning streak snapped. The Diamondbacks victory means they clinch a playoff spot and eliminate Colorado from contention for the NL West title. With San Diego winning in Milwaukee, the Padres pull two ahead of the Rockies with two left and all but eliminate Colorado from the wild card race as well. With the Padres having two games left against the now eliminated and disappointed Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego should win at least one to clinch a playoff spot. Arizona will continue to play hard as well tomorrow and Sunday to clinch the best record. If that happens they will matchup with the newly crowned NL Central Champions Chicago one of the NLDS series. The other NLDS series may very will matchup San Diego against Philadelphia. The Phillies have assumed sole possession of the NL East lead over the collapsing Mets, and its hard to imagine New York regaining their poise and swagger to catch the Phillies in what will be the greatest choke in baseball history for a September leader. The Mets had a seven game lead only two weeks ago. We will see what happens over the next two afternoons.

Meanwhile, although Colorado has come up short, I am very pleased and elated to see them to have gotten as far and as close this season as they have. It was truly a great run with a lot of highlights and exciting moments. I greatly look forward to the '08 season and maybe I can even figure out a way to get down to Tucson for some spring training games.

11 Straight Victories !!! "Don't Stop Believin' -- Hold on to That Feeling !"

Eleven consecutive victories !!! What we fans of baseball and the Colorado Rockies are witnessing is nothing short of incredible and amazing ! And it is so Wonderful and Fantastic ! Tonight, the Rockies finished off a sweep of the hated rival Los Angeles Dodgers and the Southern California roadtrip. The professionalism and dedication of all the Rockies players and coaches is something very great and special to have observed and witnessed day in and day out all season long. And now we reach the final weekend and three games of the regular season with some very sweet rewards in place for the taking. Colorado is but two games back of Arizona going into the weekend series. Keep the winning up and the first big prize is theirs, the NL WEST PENNANT ! Granted San Diego is still ahead of the Rockies at 88-71 and also is eyeing the NL West flag, but part of this all is believing Milwaukee will take two of three from the Padres to keep them at bay.

In my life, I have only had a couple of times concerning baseball with feelings of elation like this. The first was in 1969 when the wunderkind Mets came from nowhere to win it all. I also had this joy in 1979 when the Pittsburgh Pirates and Willie Stargell's We are Family became world champions. And of course, three years ago, when the Boston Redsox came back from the dead against the Yankees to win the AL pennant and sweep St Louis to win their first world championship in 86 years. Can this be another year of those level of accomplishment ? Lets BELIEVE !

Everyone else that I wanted to lose generally won Thursday. Arizona salvaged the finale at Pittsburgh; San Diego clobbered Milwaukee; Philadelphia eliminated Atlanta; but plunging New York and Chicago did lose. These results set up a weekend of many important games with enormous crucial implications. The pertinent standings at the end of the day Thursday 27 September MDT:

Arizona............89.....70.....560.....-
San Diego........88.....71......553.....1
Colorado..........87.....72......547.....2

Chicago............83.....76......522.....-
Milwaukee......81.....78.......509....2

Philadelphia....87.....72.......547.....-
New York........87.....72.......547.....-

For the upcoming weekend, Colorado hosts Arizona (6pm Friday & Saturday, 1pm Sunday); San Diego is at Milwaukee (6pm Friday, 1:55 Saturday, Noon Sunday); Washington @ Philadelphia (5pm Friday, 1:55 Saturday, 11:35 Sunday); Florida @ New York (5pm Friday, 11am Saturday & Sunday); and Chicago @ Cincinnati (5pm Friday, 1:55 Saturday, 11:15 Sunday). What needs to happen is for the Rockies to sweep the Diamondbacks; the Brewers to win 2 of 3 against the Padres; Chicago lose at least two; and Philadelphia and New York to lose at least once each. There are three other largely or somewhat meaningless series this last weekend in the NL: San Francisco @ Los Angeles; St Louis @ Pittsburgh; and Atlanta @ Houston.

I will have my eyes and ears tuned to follow everything as closely as possible the next three days and I BELIEVE the best will happen !

KEEPIN' THE FAITH !!! BELIEVIN' !!!

GO ROCKIES ! BEAT ARIZONA !

GO BREWERS ! BEAT SAN DIEGO !

GO REDS ! BEAT CHICAGO !

GO MARLINS ! BEAT NEW YORK !

GO NATIONALS ! BEAT PHILADELPHIA !

Think of the Journey song: "Don't Stop Believin' "! Thats my pick for the theme song for these wonderful Rockies. Other who have posted on a Denver Post Rockies blog have some other great ideas. The theme from the movie "Rocky" is another splendid choice.

This weekend coming up is the most fun you can have with your clothes on !

Thursday 27 September News Articles and Observations

Here are some recent news articles from Thursday 27 September and some brief observations on them.

A. Rutgers Professor Speaks the Truth About the Hypocrisy of Big Time College Athletics

By big time college athletics, that means college football and mens college basketball. The other college sports for men are guilty on limited occasions and at certain schools (re: Arizona State and college baseball). Virtually no womens sports are in the mix with the possible exception of womens college basketball in the SEC and perhaps a few other high profile programs around the country. But to back to the point, the college professor is absolutely right and I am in complete agreement with him. It is time to eliminate college athletic scholarships for football and mens basketball and force the NFL and NBA to create and fund their own farm system rather than virtually exclusively relying on a wholly taxpayer subsidized system to grow and mature their future athletes and players. Most college players are a walking joke as college students in football and mens basketball across the nation. But it will never change...

D. Ecosystem Crisis in the Making

What is not said here is not surprising. Foraging animals need to have natural predators in their ecosystems, and for these deer and antelope that means a greater number of cougars, mountain lions, bears, coyotes, and particularly wolves are needed to control the growing and increasingly destructive populations of these foragers. Man cannot do it alone.

Ten In A Row !!!! Don't Stop Believin' !!!!!

The Colorado Rockies won their franchise best tenth consecutive game this evening as they topped the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 2-0. They are an unprecedenteed 5-0 on this Southern California road trip ! Colorado's won-lost record moves to 86-72 with their 17th win in 24 games in September. They remain one game behind the San Diego Padres as the Padres smoked San Francisco to keep up the pace. Philadelphia also won over Atlanta, basically eliminating the Braves, to stay even with Colorado. Good news from the other games though. Pittsburgh crawled out of the coffin again to beat the NL West leading Diamondbacks for a second night, reducing Arizona's lead to just one over SD and two over Colorado. Amazingly, the Washington Nationals wrapped up a three game sweep of the NL East leading New York Mets at Shea Stadium. The Mets' lead is now down to one over the Phillies. In Miami, Florida knocked off the Chicago Cubs, but the Cubs maintain their two game lead over Milwaukee as the Brewers fell at home to St Louis.

Only four days remain in the regular season now. Colorado faces another critical game in the finale at Chavez Ravine Thursday Night against the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the many of the other teams change opponents or travel for their upcoming weekend series. San Diego is at Milwaukee for the opener of a tension-packed four games series at Miller Park. Chicago finishes their series in Florida with the third game Thursday night. All of Wisconsin will be rooting for the South Florida Fish. Most of Illinois will be rooting for the Cubs. Philadelphia hosts the Atlanta Braves in the finale of their three game set. Reeling New York has a makeup game at Shea against the Cardinals. And Arizona wraps up their trip to Pittsburgh before heading back west for the weekend to Colorado.

The pertinent NL standings as of the end of the day Wednesday 26 September MDT:

Arizona.............88....70....557.......-
San Diego..........87....71....551.......1
Colorado...........86.....72...544.......2

Chicago.............83.....75....525......-
Milwaukee.......81.....77.....512......2

New York.........87.....71.....551......-
Philadelphia.....86.....72.....544......1
Atlanta.............83......75.....525.....4

I have not talked about the AL with all the excitement going in the NL. Boston has a magic number of two to win the AL East. New York has clinched the wild card. Cleveland is trying to finish up with the best record in AL having wrapped up the Central. And Anaheim won the AL West but they are asleep at the wheel this week so far as lowly Texas swept them in Arlington. The ALDS matchups look as if it will be Anaheim v Boston and Cleveland v New York. We will perhaps know for sure as early as Friday.

What a September to remember with great pennant races in the National League !

The Dream Lives on Through Tuesday !

[Because of no internet connection on Tuesday evening, this post comes about 19-20 hours late.]

The maximum desired optimum results almost occurred on Tuesday. Everyone that needed to win and everyone that needed to lose did with one exception. San Diego rallied in the 9th for a 6-4 victory over San Francisco that keeps the Padres ahead the Rockies by one game in the wildcard playoff race. Of great importance were the losses by Arizona and Philadelphia. It was also fine to have Chicago and New York lose and Milwaukee win. All the matchups that occurred Tuesday continue today, although the pitching matchups overall are a little less favorable.

Of greatest and primary importance is having the Colorado Rockies win tonight again in Los Angeles against the now eliminated Dodgers. Tuesday night's 9-7 win was not as pretty as one would like at this time of the season, but a win is a win and we will take it. It was the Rockies' ninth consecutive victory which ties the club record set back in 1997. Of the three games in LA, this is the one I believed would be the least difficult but we will all have to see as everyday is different and unpredictable.

So with just FIVE days left in the regular season, Colorado and Philadelphia are tied, one game behind San Diego for the wild card. Of interest as well, Arizona is three up on Colorado; Chicago leads Milwaukee by just two for the Central; and New York leads the Phillies by two for the East. It is a great finish in the making...

GO ROCKIES !!! BEAT LA !!!

GO GIANTS ! BEAT SAN DIEGO !

GO BRAVES ! BEAT PHILADELPHIA !

GO PIRATES ! BEAT ARIZONA !

GO NATIONALS ! BEAT NEW YORK !

GO BREWERS ! BEAT ST LOUIS

GO MARLINS ! BEAT CHICAGO !

Monday Goes Well

Everything that could go right did go right on Monday for the idle Colorado Rockies in their pursuit of a wild card postseason berth. Primarily, the San Diego Padres were routed by the San Francisco Giants, 9-4, at AT&T Park. The loss drops San Diego to 85-71 and into a tie with Philadelphia for the wildcard lead and only one game ahead of the Rockies. The Phillies were idle on Monday. The Phillies also gained ground on New York as the Mets fell to Washington 13-4 which drops the lead in the NL East to two games. And in the other important game, Milwaukee routed St Louis 12-5 to remain in contention for the NL Central flag. It is important the Brewers keep winning against the Cardinals as they need to be fighting hard when San Diego comes to Brewtown for four games starting Thursday. We also need the Florida Marlins to put in a superb effort the next three days and get the better of the Chicago Cubs. And Atlanta needs to do the same when they start their three games against the Phillies also on Tuesday. And if all those good things can happen, it would only be better if the Pirates show some life and stun Arizona in their series starting Tuesday in Pittsburgh which might this upcoming weekend's series between the Rockies and Diamondbacks at Coors Field take on an even greater meaning !

Six days left in the regular season, but by far the most important thing is for the Rockies to take care of their own business and play well and win at Dodger Stadium starting tomorrow night and through Wednesday's and Thursday's games also.

KEEPIN' THE FAITH ! BELIEVIN' !

GO ROCKIES ! BEAT LOS ANGELES !

GO GIANTS ! (over San Diego)

GO BRAVES ! (0ver Philadelphia)

GO BREWERS ! (over St Louis)

GO MARLINS ! (over Chicago)

GO NATIONALS ! (0ver New York)

GO PIRATES ! (over Arizona)

...only one meaningless series in the NL this part of the last week... Houston @ Cincinnati...

I. Is Another Depression Looming ?

It would seem unlikely, but not impossible. You look at all the issues -- our collapsing currency; the housing bubble crisis; an out of control federal budget and deficit; a virtual complete loss of the American manufacturing economic sector to foreign labor; an endless war that looks to only grow and expand; financing the wars by just printing more and more money without any kind of standard; the aging of the major American demographic towards their senior years; rampant corporacy and the stark decline of the middle class; wealthy people and corporations not paying taxes as needed; a serious drop in ethics and morality across the nation; and energy costs spiraling out of control; and many other problems as well -- and it does seem to be within the realm of possibility. And what will rapid sudden climate change mean to our economy as well ?

M. Social Security: What is to Be Done ?

Nothing will get done on this vital issue in the next 16 months with the lameduck Bush Junta at the helm, but policy recommendations hopefully will be forthcoming between 2009 and 2010 as the first of the Baby Boomers start to cross the 65 year old age threshold. I would think the income ceiling needs to be removed on paying SSN taxes; a cash payout of all SSN taxes paid to wealthy retirees needs to be an option to them when they reach age 70 that also gives them some interest on their investment; and the COLA needs to be adjusted on retirees who have other sources of income for their retirement. This is a very complex and deeply personal problem set for those who will be looking into how to make Social Security solvent long term, if that is even possible. Of a more looming and critical concern are Medicaid and Medicare. Lets hope the Health Coverage Legislation that emerges in the coming years takes huge steps towards solving the financial problems of those two programs that are seriously looming within a decade.

The Dream Continues To Live On !

The young amazing Colorado Rockies continue to astound and bring excitement (!!!) and smiles :) :) to fans like me as the last week of the MLB regular season starts. The Rockies have now won eight straight -one game shy of tying a club record - and today (Sunday 23 September) wrapped up an completely unexpected three game sweep of their fellow postseason aspirants San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. Colorado now stands at 84-72 - a new club record for victories - and are but a game and half out of the wild card spot. San Diego stands at 85-70 while Philadelphia sits at 85-71. The Padres play their last seven games on the road with three at San Francisco starting Monday and wrapping up their season with four at Milwaukee starting Thursday. Philadelphia plays their last six games at home with three starting Tuesday against the still alive tough Atlanta Braves and ending with three against the Washington Nationals over the next weekend. Colorado has three challenging games in Los Angeles starting Tuesday and wrap up their regular season at home starting Friday with three against the probable NL West Division Champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona is 88-68, just four games ahead of the Rockies and only 2 1/2 in front of the Padres, but before the Diamondbacks close their regular season with three in Denver against the Rockies, they have three games in Pittsburgh starting Tuesday against the hapless Pirates and should win at least two if not all of of those three games considering what is at stake for the D-backs. With the challenges facing San Diego and Colorado in this last week, it would seem unlikely they will be able to overtake Arizona for the divisional flag. Colorado needs to keep winning and hope to get some help from San Francisco, Milwaukee, Atlanta, and Washington this week. I would think 89 is the number the wild card winner will need to have. 5-1 is a tall order for the Rockies, but given what has happened so far, it is realistic and foreseeable. I will be intently watching and listening all week to see what eventuates.

GO ROCKIES !!!!!!

Climate Change Ramifications on the Very Land Americans Live On

A research project by scientists and students at the University of Arizona in Tucson has mapped out in great detail the consequences of the looming rise in sea levels on the coastal and low-lying areas in the United States and elsewhere. Scenarios ranging from a one meter to six meter rise in sea levels are presented and what is anticipated is greatly alarming. It is virtually certain before the end of the 21st Century we will see a widespread loss of land to the ocean and the wiping out of cities and homes of tens of millions, probably hundreds of millions across the planet. We can probably start to really see the beginning of this within the next two decades. Large parts of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas will be consumed by the sea within the lifetime of children alive today. Philadelphia, Washington, and Orlando will be seaports. The physical size of Florida will decrease by greater than one-half. Miami, New Orleans, Gulfport-Biloxi, Savannah, Galveston, Corpus Christi, and other noteworthy cities will simply cease to exist.

And one has to little if any doubt that all this will happen, perhaps sooner and in more violent and sudden ways than is forecasted and expected. Mankind simply will not do what it takes to prevent any of this from happening.

Autumn Commences in Wyoming

My favorite season of the year officially began this morning at 3:51 am MDT with the passing of the Autumnal Equinox. The next three months see a fast and steep decline in both temperatures and the amount of daylight hours. Here in Cheyenne, we have already seen a decline in average daily high temperature from 84 to 68 and in the lows from 56 t0 41 from their summertime peaks. Daylight has decreased from a peak of 15:09 to 12:08 in length. By the time the Winter Solstice arrives in December, daylight hours have dropped to 9:12 and the normal temps are at 37 for a high and 17 for a low with still another five weeks of decline before the numbers start to rise again the last week of January. Another regular climatological occurence begins to recommence again during the Autumn with the reappearance of the prevailing strong westerly winds that dominate the climate here on this part of the continent from Halloween until Easter.

All that being said, Autumn is still the best season of the year here. The cooler days are invigorating yet still warm, the sun shines the most during September and October, the sun angle brings a comfortable perspective to all that one sees, and annual changing of colors in the leaves on trees and shrubs and their subsequent falling is always a beautiful sight to behold and marvel at. I always enjoy getting out to take a walk and feel the wonderful weather during the next several weeks that we get to experience here in the Rocky Mountains and High Plains.

Economics Mathematician Paints a Very Gloomy Picture

The science of economics is really the mathematics of economics, and there are some individuals whose insight and wisdom can be used to draw future outlooks for the national and global economy. The article here is particularly gloomy and only in time will we possibly know how right he may be...

Important Blog URL to Bookmark

This week, the New York Times ended their restricted access to parts of their website, including most of the Times's columnists. One was able to read many of these columnists in other places but sometimes it was an effort to locate them. One of the most important and relevant columnists, Princeton University Economics Professor Paul Krugman, has a blog link that can be easily accessed to read regularly.

Wednesday 19 September News Articles and Observations

Here are a couple of recent news articles and some brief observations on them.

A. Report on the Most Corrupt Members of Congress

Many of the names on this list are not surprising. McConnell of Kentucky reeks so bad of corruption he is a walking river of flatulation. We all know that politicians from Alaska and New Mexico are seriously and constantly corrupt. And there has to be some from California just because it is so populous. There are probably many more but these 22 are among the most seriously corrupt and guilty of various crimes.

B. International Dollar Woes Continue to Grow

The American Economy is a disaster, largely operating only because of massive debt by government, corporations, families, and individuals. With the collapse of the housing market underway and only expected to worse, it is inevitable that foreign investors will look elsewhere to earn money from their investments. And the American economy will continue to increasingly suffer.

C. An Idea Whose Time Has Come

I wholeheartedly support this idea, but it is highly unlikely ever to become reality. Only if laws and rules are enacted that apply to all types and kinds of government that would prohibit businesses and corporations who pay excessive salaries and compensation to executives and management from having business dealings and contracts with all forms of government everywhere will it begin to take flight.

D. The Shame and Disgrace of Bush Mercenaries in Iraq

I have strongly aware of the shortcomings of the mercenary corporation Blackwater that has been operating in Iraq and without any real oversight. My misgivings have been confirmed again this last week and I hope its only a matter of time before this Bush Junta hired muscle is run out of Iraq.

F. American Military Forces Relief Act Shot Down in US Senate By Republicans

Democrats in the US Senate were only able to get five Republicans to join them on this Jim Webb sponsored bill that would have required troops to spend an equal amount of time at home to what they spend in Iraq. Voters, please remember those cowardly and foolish Republicans next year in the primaries and the general election.

A Sweet Sweep With a Tremendous Ending

As Summer fades into Autumn, the remaining days of the baseball season slip away like sand grains in an hourglass. The Colorado Rockies are probably going to end like one of those grains of sand, but they are fighting until the end and providing some great play and entertainment along the way. Tuesday 18 September was a striking example of just that. Sweeping a day-night doubleheader against their bitter rivals and fellow postseason berth challengers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are moments for fans and followers to remember and treasure after so many seasons of having no meaningful games in September. Save 1995, and this is the only other pennant race this club has ever been in. Having the nightcap end in such a dramatic fashion with a walkoff home run by the franchise's stalwart, Todd Helton, was truly a stirring moment and one for the ages for fans like me. And it keeps the dream alive for another day. Just maybe...

Mountain West Conference Football Review After Week Three

What was forecast for the MWC before the season commenced has not come to fruition. The top three schools have had their struggles. Preseason favorite Texas Christian was clobbered at Texas and took it on the chin at Air Force, leaving the Horned Frogs with two losses early and in a competitive race for the conference title. BYU also has two early losses at UCLA and Tulsa. Utah lost their first two contests but bounced back strongly and surprisingly this weekend by blowing out UCLA in Salt Lake City.

The three schools expected to finish in the second tier look as if they may be closer to the top than originally anticipated. Surprising New Mexico shocked Arizona in Tucson this weekend and maybe the dark horse to take the conference. Wyoming did lose at Boise to the Broncos, but the Cowboys are clearly improved. Colorado State still is looking for their initial win after two very close losses to start the campaign, but the Rams appear to be competitive for the intra-conference slate of games.

Air Force also seems to be much improved, and a home conference win over TCU leads the Falcons and their fans to have greater optimism. Alas, the UNLV Runnin' Rebels and San Diego State Aztecs have yet to find their way this season, although UNLV did give a top 5 ranked Wisconsin squad a real good game last weekend in Las Vegas before losing in the final minutes.

With only one intraconference game played thus far in the season's first three weeks, much remains to be seen. Next weekend Air Force is at BYU and Utah at UNLV, games which will provide some greater insights on which teams really are contenders and pretenders for the 2007 Mountain West Conference Football Championship.

The Background Story of the Republican Economic Crackpots and Idiots Who Have Ruined the US

This is a real good article that explains fairly clearly just what the hell happened to our country these last 27 years and what steps probably need to be taken to somewhat stop the bleeding -- although the wound on this nation will never heel. Corporations and the wealthy must be reined in hard and decisively, and very soon, as our national and personal survivals are completely dependent on these changes.
