Bertie Higgins: "Bogie and Bacall"

Pittsburgh Post - Gazette: For Players, Game Seven "The Chance of a :Lifetime"

It may not replace words such as abracadabra, presto or hocus-pocus, but mention Game 7 for the Stanley Cup and something magical happens. Tough, bruising hockey players are transformed into little boys.

The Pens' Max Talbot, who grew up in LeMoyne, Quebec, dreamed about just such a moment when he and his pals got together for pickup games.

Would Be Nice, But I Still Need a Lot More Convincing...

Still Online, at Least for the Time Being...

We have made it to the morning of Tuesday 9 June and the internet connection is still up and running, but for how much longer is unknown.

Generally this writer is trying to provide a list of critical, interesting, and sometimes light hearted links on a daily basis in a regular column on the http://mountaintimezoneperspective.blogspot.com blog weekdays. In the coming several days to week and beyond, if two to three days go by without any columns with these links information, or another column, one can assume the internet connection is no longer available and maybe for an extended period of time due my personal financial circumstances becoming even more grievous. This particular blog one is reading from now is not usually updated daily, but posts should occur at least two to three times or more at a minimum weekly.

One caveat, however: if this writer does miraculously manage to acquire employment in the coming days to weeks, the workday may be of enough a length and result in fatigue which will prevent postings from occurring regularly. If this does become the case, this writer will place a note on this blog informing its readers of just such that case.

On this blog, I will make another update at the end of the day on TUE 9 June or early in the morning on WED 10 June. If no update appears, one can assume the hangman's noose for my internet connection has brought me down from the gallows.

For those in the know, the job interview on Monday left me with the impression I was not going to be hired for employment at that business. I may be incorrect, but one never knows...

I Have a Possible Idea What Could Cause My Demise in the Future

I have been doing some reading and I have some indications that I may be headed towards being a diabetic at some point in the future. Obviously a timetable and a decisive conclusion is something I cannot be sure of, but certain symptoms I seem to possess at least raise questions of a possibility of entering into that status at some point; when would seem to be a key question.

The symptons which are raising questions are several: Increased and constant thirst, although that does go up and down in frequency and intensity; vision issues which seem to be only worsening; the recent case of the fire ant bites which have been tremendously slow to heal relative to my personal historic norm for other previous injuries; numbness and pain in my fingers and hands, and on rare occasions with some of my toes; dry and itchy skin at times; and a fruity taste which seems somewhat regular in my mouth which is only abated by consumption of strong foods to the contrary such as milk or ice cream; tomato sauce; salads and vegetables; and meats.

I will continue to try to be observant and aware of what is happening to me on a physiological level. My increasing mental health issues which are being strongly exacerabated by my persistent inability to get a sniff of employment and work which is leading to stress and depression can only make matters worse in a number of ways as my diet suffers from lack of money resulting in budget conscious choices which are not always ideal.

While drawing a worst case scenario from observed conditions that very well could be coincidental and not related is not necessarily an edict for making a diagnosis, it does require me to be vigilant and aware of the consequences of aging and not being able to live an ideal and optimum healthy lifestyle. There also seems to be genetic issues in play from what I understand but this not entirely clear.

Of course, I am not going to really know at any point soon as I lack any way to afford to have a professional medical study conducted and make that determination. And that is not to going to change while I continue to live in Cheyenne, and possibly even after I return to Colorado in 2010, 2011, or later, as the hope for relocating has dimmed significantly with worthwhile and non-J O B (Just Over Broke) employment seemingly unlikely at this point and for quite some time to come.

Personal Downward Collapse Hastens

It is now been about six months since I last had work, and what reserves I had to last out my unemployment have now been exhausted. As each week goes by I get in deeper straits, and the likelihood of becoming homeless again is more than a real possibility. If I don't get work within the next two weeks or so, I will be compelled to give up my home and go back to sleeping in my truck as was the case for nine months in 2004-2005.

Already I am behind on utilities as I lacked funds to pay electricity, internet, cable, and cellular in May, and the new bills are about to arrive. Generally once one gets two months behind these services are terminated. I expect that to start to occur by mid month. And now my rent is past due as I am unable to pay my June rent of $430. At this point I am about $800 in the hole including utilities.

Food is not yet an issue as I have about ten days worth of supplies still on hand and about $35 in cash to do a minimal replenishment. But that will only buy about three weeks worth more of food.

My plan is to continue to seek employment, but results so far have been beyond dismal. Of all the inquiries I have made, only a couple of them have had any feedback, and they were offering only 10 hours per week which would only bring in about $70 per week, a pittance.

If I continue to experience failure or, more accurately, indifference, I will borrow money to rent storage space and a U-haul to empty out my unit before the end of July and return to life on the streets.

And if life continues on the streets for more than a few months, then I will be checking out rather than endure a Wyoming winter outdoors. Better to choose to end things on one's own terms than slowly but surely freeze and starve to death. The grim truth is the inevitable reality if things don't turn in time.

UPDATED 6/4: Baltimore Orioles Spring Training to Tucson ?

I hope to see it happen. Bringing the Orioles to Tucson for Spring Training, along with perhaps the Milwaukee Brewers, would ensure baseball would be played in The Old Pueblo for many years to come. Tucson is clearly a better city and metro area than Phoenix as it is easier to get around in, more scenic, less congested, and more fitting.

All this being said, it still looks to be a longshot for the Orioles to leave Florida, and for the other two Cactus League clubs to still be playing games in Pima County by 2011 or 2012.

Top Ten Beaches in America

I have only been to Cape Hatteras among the beaches listed here, but I believe many of my siblings have been to an additional number of these coastal treasures over the years.

1. Hanalei Bay Beach, Kauai, Hawaii: This spectacular white crescent-shaped sand beach is considered by many to be the most beautiful beach setting in Hawaii. The two-mile-long strand is lined by palm trees, with a backdrop of waterfalls and mountain peaks that range up to 4,000 feet high. One of the best views of the beach is from the Princeville Hotel, located on the high bluff to the east. The other end of this wide coral sand beach is anchored by a high lava point that extends into the ocean, a panorama that has been the inspiration for many paintings and photo shoots.

2. Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Fla.: With some of the finest, whitest sand in the world, this beach attracts sand collectors from all over. Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters that provide ideal swimming. The beach is hundreds of yards wide in the shape of a crescent, due to anchoring of onshore rocks to the north and a unique underwater formation of coral rock and caves.

3. Coopers Beach, Southampton, N.Y: Coopers Beach is located on the south shore of Long Island, shielded from the cold Labrador currents. As the first "Gold Coast" in the country, Coopers Beach is hundreds of yards wide, made of grainy white quartz sand. The beach is backed by large sand dunes covered by American beach grass, interspersed with large and extravagant mansions.

4. Coronado Beach, San Diego, Calif.:
Coronado Beach measures hundreds of yards wide and features lush subtropical vegetation, a Mediterranean climate, fine sparkling sand and mild surf. The local landmark, Hotel del Coronado, was built more than 100 years ago, offering spectacular architecture and Old World elegance. Kings, sheiks, actors, and actresses have stayed there, and the hotel is now a great location for celebrity-spotting.
5. Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii: Rimmed by cliffs and covered by coconut palm trees and flowering vegetation, this crescent beach, a mixture of coral and lava sand, is the most famous of Maui’s Hana beaches. To get to Hamoa Beach, drive the "Road to Hana," the treacherous highway with drop-offs of more than 1,000 feet, sporadic guardrails and more than 50 one-way bridges. Ernest Hemingway once said that Hamoa Beach was the world’s best beach, but it’s only no. 5 on this year's list.

6. Main Beach, East Hampton, N.Y.: Providing a blend of nature and a built environment, the beaches here are protected by a conservation easement that dates back more than 300 years. Main Beach is a great place for star-spotting, since many actors and actresses frequently visit this beach for its idyllic setting in a small village. The wide sandy beach made of quartz has towering sand dunes and clean, clear blue water.

7. Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, N.C.: Bulging far offshore of the mainland coast as a barrier island, Cape Hatteras was the first National Seashore. Cape Hatteras provides some of the best board surfing along the East Coast, as well as the most famous lighthouse in the U.S. It attracts beachgoers and nature lovers alike for its historic fishing villages, superb fishing and excellent beachcombing.

8. Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, Fla.: Cape Florida State Park, located at the southern tip of Key Biscayne, provides clear, emerald-colored waters and gentle surf. This fine, white-coral sand beach is great for swimming, as any waves are knocked down by a large sand shoal offshore. In addition, the Cape Florida Lighthouse gives access to a breathtaking view of the beach.

9. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.: Coast Guard Beach, accessible by bicycle or via shuttle bus from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center, was formed where a sand spit attached to the eroding glacial cliffs. The sand is fairly coarse, so the beach slopes steeply into the water. The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs, allowing for a spectacular view down upon the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay. During the summer, beachgoers tend to take quick dips in the ocean, as water temperatures only reach 60 to 70 degrees.

10. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, S.C.: South of Charleston, Beachwalker Park is the public beach located on the southern end of Kiawah Island. Tennis and golf are featured here, as well as interpretative tours of the island’s fauna and flora. Visitors can pack their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets, or walk down to St. Sam’s Inlet to see thousands of birds. The water is not clear here, but it is clean and provides for fantastic seafood for low-country cooking. Visitors can also pack their bicycles, since the sand is compact enough to ride along the 10-mile-long barrier island.
